Did you know that Google is now ranking web sites according to how fast they load (how fast you see it on the screen) on a mobile phone? Click here to get the workbook “Is your web site SEO friendly?” to find out how fast your web site loads. Look for it under the cheat sheets.
Okay, on to #
Yeah, this is kind of techie nerdy. Sorry, but it is important: Always use a – between words in your page names. For instance, instead of SEO_company, SEOcompany or “SEO company,” use SEO-company. Using a – makes it easy for search engines to separate the words. Using an underscore makes it look like all the words are running together.
And never use a space, the internet still sometimes interprets a space as %20 so SEO space company could be seen on the internet as SEO%20company, which means nothing to the search engines or to people.
The Meta Description is the line of text you see that describes a web page when you see search results. So, in search results, you usually see the title in bold, then the description below that. The desired length of a Meta Description used to be 150 characters, but now you can go to 240.
And it’s good to use more than less. use the Meta Description to continue describing your web page from where you left off on your title tag.
Search engines have no idea what an image is so they ignore it. They look for the text and the alt tag instead. You can put as much information as you want in an alt tag, but don’t be spammy.
Once you go into the media area of WordPress, click the image you want, and the information will show up on the right. Fill in the title and alt, don’t fill in the caption unless you want that text showing up on the page. The description area is optional.
Search engines rank the importance of keywords depending upon where they are on your site. The least important spot is the alt tag of images (but that doesn’t mean you can ignore this area).
The most important is the H1 or main heading of your page. The second most important is an H2 heading and so on.
Only link to websites you trust, because your clients may click on that link. That can be important. If you just put any links on your site, what if it’s somebody that has a website that is fundamentally different from you? if someone has a website that’s fundamentally different than what you believe in, you might get clients that have different core values than you have.
And I don’t really go into this a lot but finding clients that have the same core values as you do will generally mean you’re going to be happier and your clients are going to be happier.
So linking to sites that you trust and people that you trust are going to help you get more of the clients that you’re interested in having.
Keywords can be, and should be, placed in the normal text of your web site. if your H1 tag says “I sell widgets,” but your text is about plumbing in New York, the search engines are going to know something’s wrong.
Keep the keywords in your text similar to the ones in your heading tags and you’ll get higher in the search engines.
Backlinks, link building, link juice… it all means the same thing: A website has a link that goes to your website, that’s it. But it’s critically important. One of the ways that search engines use to verify your site is legitimate (who would link to a web site that isn’t? Hackers, spammers, etc.) is through who links to your website.
Develop a plan to build links. Look for complementary businesses. A plumber might trade links with a local electrician, you can get links from your local Chamber of Commerce and other organizations, etc.
Be sure to pick people you trust to link to you.
Google will place a much higher priority if you are being linked from the White House or Microsoft than it would if the local drug dealer linked to you.
Yes they know the difference. Of course, here in Washington state where marijuana is legal they have drug web sites and so I don’t know where to go with that.
So, the more popular the website is that you’re linking to, the higher your domain score will be in Google. and the higher the domain score the more likely you will get to the top of the search engines.
