No business can run in a vacuum (and who would want to with all that wind and noise?), it takes more than one person to make a business successful.
Even if you are that person who has done everything on your own up until now, I’m (hopefully) going to show you how your business can explode by cultivating strategic partnerships.
As an example, let’s say you are an electrician (solopreneur) and you are hired to help a person with electrical problems in their house. But they also have some plumbing problems. If you had a strategic partnership with a good plumber, you would know exactly who to refer to your client.
And they would be happy, especially if you did a good job for them because they will expect the same quality from your referral.
I have had strategic partnerships with many other businesses over the years and, I hate to say it, but several of them are not partners anymore because I can’t trust them with my customers. It’s not that they do terrible work, but I have a standard when I give my word to a customer.
You should too. Pick reputable businesses to partner with. Check their Yelp® listing, Facebook® reviews and they Google® business listing. Every company will get some bad reviews (you can’t please everyone, and you shouldn’t try), but be wary if a majority of their reviews are 2-star and below.
That is step 1 when looking for a new strategic partner. Find up to 10 business you would like to partner with in a particular industry. Check their reviews and choose the first you want to contact.
Step 2: Contact them. Call or send them a quick email. Tell them you are looking for a new strategic partner in their industry. Do not spend a lot of time telling them how great you are, make the first contact short and sweet.
Ask them if they would be interested in talking more about a referral partnership.
It’s that easy. If they say no, or don’t get back to you in a week, move on to the next business on your list.
A strategic partnership means that you will not refer anyone to your partners competitors at any time and they should do the same for you.
Developing a strategic partnership will benefit both of your companies and your customers.
