I’m going over 24 SEO tips to get higher in the search engines in the next 3 weeks.
The first tip, which is the first thing I tell everybody when I do speeches for a Chamber of Commerce and when I work with organizations, I always tell them:
Remember, the entire purpose of Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, whatever search engine is to provide relevant, accurate content in its results.
If you are looking for refrigerator repair and you go on to Google and you type that in and it pops up with a whole bunch of accountants, not only are you not going to be happy with the results, if it happens enough you’re going somewhere else.
Google doesn’t want that. The entire purpose of Google is to get you accurate results when you are using their search engine, which is why your website has to have those accurate results.
If your web page has accurate results 70% of your SEO game is already won. That’s why content is so important and that’s why content is key and number one on the list.
and this works with number one as well.
You don’t want a web page on the latest research of how the elasticity of certain types of gum creates the best bubbles if your website is about refrigerator repair.
Don’t get me wrong, that might be a fun blog post but it doesn’t belong as a webpage. Relevant content has two purposes:
Now, this whole thing is a cascade effect. Google will rank you higher and people will go to your web site if you have relevant content. They’ll read the relevant information, they will like it, and then they will hire you for your products or services. It all works together.
This is the best thing that you can do to get higher in the search engines.
Hey, how is your web site doing? Does it load fast? Google is making load time a priority when ranking web sites, so find out how fast your web site loads by downloading my free workbook, “Is Your Web Site SEO Friendly?” Go to portbell.com and look for it in the cheat sheets.
Don’t have your webpage written by a physical or mental five-year-old. Yes, people sometimes misspell words when they search and there were times in the past when we used to advise clients to include misspelled words in their keywords.
But not anymore. Think of these two things:
Think about the last time you saw a result that had a website with a word that you knew was misspelled, you probably didn’t go to it.
the Hemingway editor is a great site to check your content for spelling and grammar.
Now, you may not be a writer and you don’t have to write the page yourself; you can do bullet points and hire a freelancer to do the rest (if you need help with that let me know).
Each page of your website should be optimized for several keywords, but one keyword should be more prominent than all the rest for search engine optimization purposes.
The page will get watered down in the search engines if there are too many main keywords on it, so it’s best to make a separate page with one primary keyword per page.
For instance, you might have a services page on your website with four or five services on it, but one of those should be your primary service.
If they’re all primary services then make a separate page for each of them, and here’s why:
This sentence will be your TITLE tag and your TITLE tag is going to have your primary keyword on it. It’s not going to fit in your TITLE tag if you have too many keywords.
The TITLE tag describes what will be on each specific page of your web site, so each page must have a different unique TITLE tag. Don’t use the same wording on multiple pages.
The TITLE tag should be no more than 120 characters, not words. Now, you may have heard that is should only be 60 characters, but times are changing.
Sometimes you’ll only see 60 characters and sometimes you see 120, but it is changing to 120.
You need to describe that page using no more than 120 characters including spaces and it’s going to be difficult to do that if you have several main keywords

Enough said. Don’t write false stuff on a web page because the search engines will notice it eventually. And, even if they don’t, people will and people are who you’re really trying to attract, right?
Make sure what you write is as accurate as you can get and link to other web pages that support what you’re saying.
That’s not only good for the people that are reading your material, search engines love that; they will make you more of an authority if you can link to other websites that support your view on things.
In a way it’s kind of scary. Search engines are now so good that they can tell whether a link to another web site helps you or not.
Keywords are part of the core of SEO; the cornerstone of a good search engine optimization strategy is finding the right keywords.
A plumber may think that he or she wants to be at the top of the search engines for plumber, but are you sure? Would a New York plumber want calls from people in Florida? That’s quite a drive. So, maybe “plumber New York” is better, but what kind of plumber? There are residential, commercial, industrial and other specialties.
You need to find the keywords that work best for your business and be as specific as you can. A great free tool you can use is ubersuggest. This is a robust tool that will help you find good keywords and much more.
Look at the most popular keywords, but don’t necessarily pick them if they’re very competitive. You might want to pick a keyword a bit lower in the list so you can get onto page 1 for it quicker. Then, work on the more popular keywords later (yes, subtle things like this can make a huge difference. Contact us if you would like help).
Doing all this keyword stuff won’t help if you don’t track it. Use Google Search Console or another analytic program to track how your keywords are doing over time.
I’m going to give you a bit of a secret: www.portbell.com/seotools/. We have developed a new tool program that can help you track keywords, your rankings (and your competitors).
