But very few people read the blogs and they don’t seem to get a lot of traction from them. And so he asked me; “What’s the big deal about blogs?”
And the first thing to do when you do a blog post is to do a big blog post. No, that’s not true. You don’t have to do a big blog post every time but I would like you to commit to one thing: In the next 12 months (from whatever month this is now) I want you to make a commitment: Craft two blog posts that are at least 3000 words, and they need to be quality blog posts.
They need to have good information that your client is going to be interested in. And of course you can even hire someone else to do the blog post if you want. In fact, go to my free masterclass at www.DIYSEOPRO.com. At the end of the masterclass, you’re going to be able to download my workbook: How to Craft the Perfect Blog Post for free. It’s yours to have just for watching the free masterclass.
And it’s going to show you a lot of tips and tricks on how to do a blog post. One of my previous episodes on here was Headings are Gold. Listen to that podcast also because headings are very important in your blog posts. Not just the top heading, but all of the headings.
* Don’t use a $5 word when you can use a five-cent word. The easier it is for people to be able to read your blog post, the more likely they’re going to read it. And even if your blog post is for doctors and lawyers and those kinds of people, still make it as easy as you can.
I can make SEO as techie nerdy as anything. I’ve even had SEO training that I couldn’t understand! And so I can get really tricky with SEO stuff.
But how’s that going to help you? You don’t want to do SEO for a living, you just want your website higher in the search engines, right? Blogs will do that. And that’s why you want to work on doing a great blog post. So, make the words as simple as possible.
* Make the sentences as simple as possible. Cut them short, make them seven to nine words if you can and us simple words (like I said above). Use three or four sentences in a paragraph. And this goes completely against Strunk & White’s book Elements of Style.
Well, don’t worry about that kind of stuff, that’s old school; that’s for writing books, that’s not for writing blog posts.
Use simple words and short sentences when writing a blog post. Where you have a comma, maybe you put a period in instead and do a different sentence.
* Use many paragraphs. Using paragraphs of three or four sentences long. They used say nine to 12 sentences per paragraph when writing a book, but not anymore.
You want it to be as simple as possible and as engaging as possible. Simple sentences have more excitement to them so they keep people more engaged.
Longer sentences run on more, and it makes people more tired. So keep your sentences simple.
And if you hire somebody to do it, tell them to do this.
Think about different blog posts you can do. You don’t have to do every blog post long. And the workbook How to Craft the Perfect Blog Post (at the end of the training at www.diyseopro.com) will give you several ideas on different kinds of blog posts to do: Short ones, long ones, medium ones.
Now, linking out to something like Entrepreneur magazine is a quality link. And the search engines are starting to recognize quality outbound links more, not just inbound links. So, when you talk about an article in a magazine, and then you link to it (this is how smart the search engines are getting), they’re going to know that you’re talking about that article.
And it’s going to show you as more of an authority because you’re linking to a supporting document. Or if you link to a document that says the opposite of what you’re saying, and you’re trying to say why you don’t agree with it, the search engines will still catch that.
You could do a small article, it could be four or five paragraphs. Remember, we’re talking three to four sentences per paragraph, so we’re talking about 20 sentences maybe; it’s not a lot.
Talk about what you came away with from the article and link to the article. You people are going to like it, it’s going to engage them.
Plus the people that are interested in what you wrote are going to be happy that you linked to the article because they can then go to it and read that as well.
There are other ways of crafting the perfect blog post. So remember, go to my free training, www.diyseopro.com and watch the masterclass. Then download the free PDF on How to Craft the Perfect Blog Post. It’s going to help you out quite a lot.
