Team Muscle – Team Building Tips
One useful tip to building a strong team is to look at the personalities that are involved or will be involved. How many introverts are there; how many extroverts are on the team? Are team building activities set up more for a certain personality type? Are meetings structured to benefit both introverts and extroverts? It is important to create an environment where each team member feels they can grow.
Team Building Exercise
“If you really knew me” is one of my favorite team building exercises. The group sits in a circle and one by one says “if you really knew me, you would know that…” and adds in something personal.
Try to go for three rounds. The first round is usually surface level, funny things like “I had spaghetti come out of my nose during a date,” or something similar. Usually, by the third round, more personal revelations come out.
The purpose for this exercise is two-fold.
- it allows for people to see that they have common interests they may not have known about.
- It builds trust and camaraderie. People are more likely to trust another person when they know private things about that person.
It is best for the leader to go first if the group doesn’t already know each other very well.
